A Dupe For Benefit's Roller Lash?

Have I found a perfect dupe for the ever coveted Benefit's Roller Lash Mascara?

So, a while back I, like everyone else that could get their hands on it, grabbed a copy of the March edition of Elle Magazine that featured a mini version of the brand new Benefit Roller Lash mascara. I was really excited to try this, however upon opening the box, checking out the packaging and then trying it out, I couldn't help but notice the similarities to a certain, also new, Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara....

How similar are they?

Packaging:

Metallic pink tube on both? Check. Pink and black colour scheme on both? Check. I admit, the cuter font goes to Benefit, and the actual full size of their Roller Lash mascara has a seriously cute hair roller shaped lid but in terms of colour schemes, these two are pretty darn similar.

Claims:

As we can see, the claims on the packaging of these two are slightly different. The Benefit one claims to lift and curl, whereas the Maybelline one claims to multiply lashes for a fuller effect. Do they live up to these claims though?

Brush:

Looking at both brushes side by side, we can see that they are pretty similar! Both have a curved effect and a lot of small bristles (although the Benefit one at the top does seem to have a more smaller ones on the one side). The Maybelline one seems to pick up more product but overall they are pretty similar! I've found both are easy to apply and you can see the final result just below...

Final Result:

So in this picture, I've got Benefit Roller Lash on the left eye, and Maybelline Lash Sensational on the right eye. Looking at them side by side in this picture, I can't say I can notice a huge amount of difference. The Maybelline one is definitely slightly blacker in colour, and seems to hold a curl a little better than the Benefit one but other than that they are almost identical.

From further away, I really don't think you can see much of a difference! Although, I think the Benefit one doesn't look quite as good in the second picture, my right eye with the Maybelline one looks a little more defined. I wore this makeup to uni, and no one noticed a difference either! Let's see how well they lasted after a long day...

Longevity:

Cut to 9 hours later, and everything has faded a little, Both mascaras have dropped a little, but the Benefit one much more so, and I think it's quite obvious from then picture. Neither of them smudged or flaked, but the Benefit one definitely hasn't lasted as well!

Price:

Benefit's Roller Lash  mascara retails at £19.50 and Maybelline's Lash Sensational mascara retails at £7.99.

Verdict:

Honestly, if you're considering forking out £20 for the Benefit mascara (despite it having cuter packaging) I would really consider giving the Maybelline Lash Sensational a try first! It does everything the Benefit one can, and more, and means you could buy 2 of them for the same price!

Have you tried either of these? If so what are your thoughts on the two?

  2. I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this. I did compare them in my roller lash review: http://charlinehasablog.blogspot.com/2015/03/benefit-roller-lash-review.html

I think they are pretty similar, but I don't like either of them that much. It's a really good dupe though. ;)

    Love, Charline

  3. This was such an interesting post! Really reminds us that money doesn't necessarily mean better, I have really wanted to try out that Maybelline mascara so now I feel it's a sign to buy it if its that good!

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :) Yeah, I used to be such a brand addict but then realised there are so many dupes that are just as good as the more expensive thing! Get it! It's my new fave :) xxx
